DPC Senior Associate Bodo Weber took part in a public discussion on the 20th anniversary of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s independence. The event was place at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, and was co-organized by the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe, the Diplomatic Academy Vienna, the Renner Institute and the Political Academy. Weber discussed the state of BiH’s state of politics and state with co-panelists Valentin Inzko, High Representative of the International Community in BiH and Edin Šarčević, professor of international law at the University of Leipzig. The discussion was moderated by Vedran Džihić, political scientist at the University of Vienna.
Bodo Weber in his contribution reflected on the origin of the current ruling coalition’s crisis in Bosnia-Hercegovina. He painted the broader picture of the country’s deepening institutional and political blockage since 2006. He criticized the lack of a strategy and the disunity both inside the EU as well as between the EU and the US over its Bosnia policy. Instead of facing these shortcomings, Weber noted, the West is leading a proxy debate on the Office of the High Representative (OHR) that has led to a paralysis of the Dayton instruments, while the EU’s watering down of conditionality in BiH’s integration process has yielded no tangible results
